Lorena Castillejos is our September Mom of the Month and we couldn't be happier to share her interview with you! She has been a part of our community for nearly 2 years and everyone in her classes considers her to be their friend. If you are lucky enough to take a class with Lorena (aka "Lore"), she is probably the one cheering you on or talking to you at the end of your first class. She will make you feel welcome with a beautiful smile or a funny joke. She is also an incredible mother and her natural kindness and humor are some of her best assets as a parent to her two girls. One of Lorena's daughters has special needs. She is open about her journey and is always available to reach out with love to other moms who have children on the spectrum. Hugs, love and high fives to you, Lorena!!
Where are you originally from?
I’m from Mexico City
Tell us about your little workout buddies!
I have two precious girls. Minerva is 3. She’s smart with a huge personality. She likes to ask everyone everything. Maya is 5. She’s smart, sweet and loves to come to class to see the babies.
How did you choose their names?
I choose Maya and my husband pick Minerva we love strong and meaningful names.
How did you meet your partner?
We have a friend in common and he introduced us 13 years ago.
What’s your favorite thing to do on a date night?
It has being ages since I have had the chance to get out of the house at night, so any adult related thing is good: movies, dinners out!
Tell us a little about your career.
Before the babies, I worked in the pawn shop business for 6 years. When I lived in Mexico, I was a hairstylist and I worked for a professional hair products line on the technician team. The best part of that was getting the chance to travel through my beautiful country and meet amazing and talented people in the hair industry.
How did you find out about FIT4MOM and what classes do you attend?
A good friend of mine invited me to try Strollers Strides in Sherman Oaks. After a year of attending, I felt the need to push a little bit more so I did my first Body Back Transformation and that was awesome!! I’m totally hooked and currently doing both Stroller Strides and Body Back.
What’s your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?
I really like everything! The program is really comprehensive. They have everything that a mommy needs, amazing and effective workouts, fellow moms who almost immediately become your friends, play dates for the little ones and the most important is that good, organic vibe! I personally like to cheer everyone on. It is always hard and awkward to be new in a group, so I try to make the new mommies feel welcome and comfortable.
What is your favorite family activity?
I love to just spend time with them. I try to enjoy every moment even if it is just chilling and joking on the bed (yes! 4 of us on one)! Ha ha. We love to have lunch out, go to the beach, take trips, etc.
What is your proudest moment as a mom?
Uff!! Tricky question.. well as a mom for a kid with special needs every little achievement is a reason to be proud! But looking at my girls being kind to others, doing things on their own or imitating me doing push-ups - that makes me feel great and proud of myself and my job as a mom.
What has been the most challenging part of motherhood?
Everything is a challenge when you are a new mom. No one can be 100% prepared to have a baby. There are always new things to learn and deal with, but for me it was definitely when my oldest daughter was diagnosed with ASD Autism Spectrum Disorder. After that day, I promised myself to work even harder for my girls and do everything that is within my power to help them grow strong independent and loved. I also work on my marriage because it is easier to guide and raise them with their daddy by my side! He’s not just my husband, he is my friend and my partner for life.
What advice would you give to a new mom?
Follow your instincts and let your mom intuition to guide you. Your baby was connected to you since conception, so listen to that voice and magical bond.
