We are so excited to announce Eliza Barrera is our March Mom of the Month! She is one of the most engaged moms we know. She makes motherhood and fitness look effortless to those of us who are lucky enough to know her, but she still approaches life with humility, kindness and an incredible empathy. We are grateful for Eliza's friendship and her presence at FIT4MOM.
Congratulations, Eliza! We'd also like to thank Golden Child for giving Eliza a gorgeous new diaper bag insert!
Where are you originally from?
I was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. And I moved to the U.S when I was 14.
How did you meet your husband?
My husband, Matt and I met and got married in college. I wasn't actually going to return to that school after my first year but my Dad suggested I give it another quarter and then maybe transfer to a different school. I met Matt the second week of school and decided to stick around.
Tell us about your little workout buddies!
My son, August, is 3 years old. He loves to trade cars during class and to ask me questions about life while I'm in mid burpee. My daughter, Brontë, is 4 months old. She loves all things that 4 months old love. Milk, sleep and then some more milk.
How did you choose their names?
Matt and I had been praying about when we would start having kids. I woke up one morning with August 24th burning in my mind. I knew it was someone's birthday but had no idea whose. A few months after the fact we found out we were expecting and that the due date was the 23rd. I went into labor on the 23rd and August was born early on the 24th. We always liked the name but we loved the fact that his name will always remind us of a prayer answered in a pretty poignant way!
My Dad had wanted to call me Brontë and I loved the name. We always wait until we meet our babies to find out if they are a boy or a girl. And when we met her we thought it suited her quite well.
How did you find out about FIT4MOM and what classes do you attend?
You can't visit Sherman Oaks park without noticing the huge pack of stroller pushing mommas! I joined Stroller Strides when I was pregnant with Brontë and I recently joined Run Club too!
What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?
EVERYTHING. But really. The routine. First thing in the morning. Being outside. Working out. Working out with the kids. Adult conversations. Community. Friends for my kids. Did I mention the adult conversations?
What is your favorite family activity?
My husband really enjoys surfing so we visit the beach a lot. Matt catches some waves, August catches some sand crabs and Brontë and I take one for the team by laying in the sun and taking a nap.
What's your favorite thing to do on a date night?
In this season of life I would have to say grabbing some food and people watching and talking. Nothing crazy. Nothing expensive. Just being with each other and reminding one another that the relationship between us is the most important in order to love these kiddos well!
What is your proudest moment as a mom?
Giving birth! But in all seriousness, I think the moments that stand out are when I am not letting my emotions be dictated by my circumstances. i.e. when that smoothie bottle explodes as you're running late for something and you realize your infant has rolled under the couch.
How has becoming a mother changed you?
I remember watching an episode of Parenthood back in the day and three of the matriarchs were giving wisdom to the character, Amber, right before she had her baby. They said some really sweet and encouraging things to her but they also said "welcome to the club". And it's so true! You have grown a baby, given birth and are now taking care of said baby. It's this wild ride that not everyone gets to experience.
What advice would you give a new mom?
Get yo self some community! You need it! Join Stroller Strides and talk to some mommas. Make friends with those mommas and get some endorphins from all that working out! And welcome to the club!
